Briefing #00: Why I started Briefly Legal

Do I Even Want to Be a Lawyer?

In 9 days, I will receive my A-Level results, and in 1 month, I will begin my first year of university studying law.

To be honest, I have spent my holidays questioning whether law is a good choice.

I picked it because I find it interesting (to a certain degree), and I (humbly, of course) believe I am good at it (to a certain degree).

However, the more my mum repeats 'you're going to be a lawyer', the more something feels a little off; although, I'm starting to think this is a feeling that will remain no matter what I choose.

I guess that is what sparked my blog, my hesitation and fear is starting to cut a little too deep and this is my attempt at ridding myself of such feelings.

The Plan (Sort Of)

The hope is that my journey will look a little something like this:

  1. I start with little to no legal knowledge; however, I persevere through my lack of understanding

  2. As I write, I notice that my legal knowledge is improving (I will doubt this a couple of times, but should soon find definite proof that I am truly getting better)

  3. Throughout university, I continue to write everything I learn, and a small passion starts to grow

  4. I find my niche in law, the thing that makes me believe any side effects of legal consciousness are worth it in the long term

  5. I build a little community on this blog, where others can help each other, maybe share a couple of stories and advice

  6. I graduate with a passion for law, which only grows (I don't expect the growth to be linear, rather bumpy and uncomfortable - this is me trying to be realistic and not too naive)

My university years will probably look nothing like this, but this is the hope. Like a vision board, I will look back at this post at the end of university and see how much I was able to achieve.

Despite my hesitation, I am dead-set on pursuing law at university, at least for a year, and if I really hate it, I guess I can always drop out and figure something else out for myself.

Let Me Be Real for a Second

To make my starting point clear: I am not a professional. I don't understand legal terminology or prominent cases, or statutes. I do not know where I stand politically. I can't write academic articles or references. I lack commercial awareness and rarely read the news.

I don't know what I'm doing, but I'm willing to learn (although I am yet to know how and what I'm supposed to learn)

The Point of All This

So, this blog is for anyone else who feels they don't have all the answers, even if not necessarily related to law. This blog will reflect my journey in becoming a lawyer (unless I change my mind - which is okay too).

I will make no attempts to make this blog perfect - there will be mistakes.

This blog will simply exist as I keep learning and hopefully see this through.
